If you've seen this movie, then you know that Tom Hanks plays a Federal Express executive whose plane crashes on a deserted island. He is stuck there for four years and must transform himself emotionally and physically in order to survive.
He starts out flabby and clueless in his new environment. Over a few weeks, he becomes much more resourceful to the point where he extracts his own tooth with the blade of a figure skate and a rock.
Right after that scene, the screen fades to darkness...and then light. A title card comes up and says: Four Years Later. All we see at first is a spear going into the water, piercing a fish in one quick, efficient movement. The camera pans up to an incredibly lean and fit man....it's Tom Hanks who clearly has benefited from eating lots of lean protein and moving his body more.
It took me a minute to process that the real actor underwent this real transformation. It is totally unexpected and the contrast between him before and after four years is quite stark. I actually remember gasping when I saw this scene when the movie first came out.
My hope is that, in time, my transformation will leave people as breathless as his left me.
