the blue dress (m)

My cousin D's daughter is getting married this August.  The wedding will be a blow-out at The Taj in Boston.

Last night, while visiting my sick aunt, my cousins, mother and I were talking about the upcoming wedding.  Someone got us started on thinking about what we were planning to wear.  Cousin Patty asked my mother and Aunt Y: "What are you guys going to wear?"   They replied, "Who the hell knows if we'll even be here then!"   Here, of course, means on this earth.  How optimistic.

Patty turned to me and asked what I thought I would wear.  Before I could answer, my mother jumped in with "wear your blue dress."

I felt my blood pressure go up.  The blue dress is a 3-piece Donna Karan outfit...long skirt with a slit up the side, long tank top, long jacket.  Midnight blue.  Very flattering.  It's the only decent thing I own for formal wear.

Here are just some of the occasions to which I've worn this dress:

-sales meeting presentation to 1,200 people in Las Vegas when I launched a major new product
-press conference in NYC
-5 weddings: Cousin Frankie, Cousin Theresa, Michele, Sandy's daughter, Amy H.
-one 25th wedding anniversary
-one 60th Birthday bash
-one award ceremony (I got a major award in Boston)
-a Harvard Medical School banquet
-two different charity balls
-a function at the Ritz in Boston when I met Lauren Hutton.  Now the Ritz is called The Taj.  How poetic that we've come full cycle.

What this means is:

-the dress is old (the first event was in 2000)
-everyone I know has seen it.
-I'm bored out of my mind with it.

But the main reason is I'VE LOST ALOT OF WEIGHT.

So why would anyone suggest I wear this dress again?

I called a friend and asked her what this means.

"It means she doesn't believe you will lose more weight."

Ouch.
